Suit Supply. Not "like skin"--Like Sexism

Oh, gee, isn't this campaign horribly clever and wonderful? See??? The suits are so comfortable, they are just like SKIN! Get it??

Suit Supply horribly sexist ad campaign

Really. You need to go look at those images.

When you wear these suits, naked women will drape themselves all over you in paroxysms of delight!!!

Never mind that these images perpetuate the objectification of women.

Never mind that the women are completely stripped of personhood--they have no faces, they are interchangeable, they are mere accessories.

Never mind the visible power differential in the clothed man (face visible, challenging the camera) and the faceless, female objects.

Never mind the clear ownership of the women displayed by the man--their relative positions, his hands claiming their bodies.

Never mind the links between objectification of a class of human beings and VIOLENCE AGAINST THEM.

Never mind.
If it'll sell suits, that's all that's important.

Hey, and the website of this great company has a whole section about ethics! They believe in equitable labor practices!!! THEY MUST BE SUPER COOL AND PROGRESSIVE AND FULL OF WIN!!!!

It's advertisements like this that make me want to joyously through away all my feminist books and knowledge. After all, we live in a post-feminist society, right? Where women are equal and everything is grand?!

Yay!

Excuse me while I go bang my head against a wall.

The title of the image...yes, it's 1 Black Guy, 2 Buds!!

Le Huge Sigh.

Edgy in the Midwest

I thought a while about what to title this blog and finally decided on something. I live in the Midwest, where I find myself both on the edge--politically and personally--and made edgy by the disjunction between myself and the dominant culture surrounding me.

Not all of the Midwest is conservative.
Not all of the Midwest is religious.
Where I live is all these things and more.

I'm liberal, feminist, non-religious, outspoken, divorced, and strong-minded.

I locate myself on the far edge.

In addition, lots of people might call me edgy. I'm too concerned with words. Too concerned with minute actions that other people might not MEAN to be discriminatory. I need to "lighten up." Not to take everything so politically. To take off my critical glasses and just enjoy things.

Well, sorry. On the edge, edgy, and proud of it.
